What is a criminal record certificate
A criminal record certificate is an official document that contains information about the absence or presence of a criminal record, as well as possible restrictions.
In fact, it is the state’s response to the question: does a person have any legal issues. That is why this document often becomes a mandatory requirement in many life situations, both in Ukraine and abroad.
There are two formats: short and full. It is important to choose correctly, as different institutions require different types of certificates.
When a criminal record certificate is required
Most commonly, it is needed:
— for employment;
— to obtain a visa or submit documents abroad;
— for adoption or guardianship;
— for participation in tenders;
— for obtaining citizenship or submitting documents to the TCC.
Where to obtain a criminal record certificate
In short: it is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. You can obtain it in several ways:
— through a service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (offline)
— via the official website
— via the Diia app
Today, obtaining the certificate online is already a standard, not an exception.
However, there is an important nuance: if the document is required for use abroad, you will almost always need a translation, apostille, or legalization.
This is where many people face difficulties: obtaining the certificate itself is easy, but making it valid for another country is a different process. In such cases, it is reasonable to consider full support services, including notarized translation, to avoid redoing documents twice.
Online or offline: which is more convenient
In practice, applying online is the fastest option.
Through the Diia app or the official website, you only need to fill in your data, indicate the purpose, and confirm the request. If everything is correct, the document is issued within 10 working days.
Offline, through a service center, the process is similar but requires a personal visit.
An important point: if you have changed your name or have document-related, the online application may take longer. In such cases, it is better to details with a notary in advance to avoid delays caused by simple mistakes.
Validity period
The validity period depends on where you submit the certificate:
— in Ukraine, usually 1–3 months
— for foreign institutions, up to 90 days
— for specific procedures (such as adoption), even shorter
The most common mistake is obtaining the certificate too early and then realizing it has already expired.
It is also important to choose the correct format: full or short. If you submit the wrong type, the document may not be accepted.
In more complex cases, when the certificate is required for multiple institutions or for use abroad, it is better to consider all stages in advance — from obtaining to legalization. Such cases are usually handled through other services.
